Overview

Pawp is the pet insurance plan for pet parents who just want to make sure their beloved friends are covered in case of an emergency. The policy doesn’t cover your average visits and other benefits that some pet insurance providers do. Instead, what it focuses on are the big-ticket emergencies that happen more often than we’d like.

Pawp is all about ensuring that your pet gets the emergency medical care they need even though it’s expensive and might be otherwise out of your budget. The emergency plan covers those unexpected occurrences that would normally break the bank, allowing you to rest easy. Plus, Pawp insurance policies have no qualifications, no deductibles, no copays, no restrictions, and cover up to six dogs and cats with a single plan.

What Does it Cover

Pawp is not your typical pet insurance. In fact, it doesn’t cover a lot of the stuff you are probably used to seeing on an insurance policy for pets (more on exclusions below). But what it is good for is emergency care. Pawp specifically gears its product to pet parents that need help in an emergency situation. Pawp is of the opinion that no pet parent should ever be faced with the tough decision between seeking emergency medical treatment or having their pet suffer. That’s where this insurance policy comes into play.

More than a traditional insurance policy, Pawp’s plans are emergency medical funds. That means they take care of the emergencies that happen all too often in a pet’s life. Pawp covers things like:

  • Toxic ingestion
  • Choking on foreign objects
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe blockages
  • Severe internal injuries
  • Severe external injuries
  • Seizures
  • Severe bleeding

Essentially, a Pawp vet will perform a triage of the situation to determine if it is an emergency or not. But generally, the fund will cover things that require immediate veterinary care.

Insurance Plans & Pricing

Pawp has one simple plan: $19 a month flat rate. That plan covers up to six pets at a time. Let’s be clear here. You pay less than $20, and you get coverage for six furry friends. That’s incredible!

What is Not Covered

Ok, so Pawp is pretty extensive in its coverage net. But it doesn’t actually cover everything. The insurance is specifically designed to help pet parents cover medical emergencies when they happen to their pets. So it’s not meant to be used for the standard, day-to-day upkeep. Here are a few things that you can’t use your Pawp emergency fund for:

  • Scheduled appointments
  • Scheduled surgeries
  • Regular check-ups, annual visits, and wellness visits
  • Vaccinations
  • Prescription medications (unrelated to the emergency)
  • And other routine procedures

So its not for things like deworming, X-rays, and secondary issues not related to the emergency.

Waiting Periods

Pawp has one of the shortest waiting periods around, and that’s good news because you never know when an emergency is going to pop up. You will wait five days from the time of enrollment into the program before you can access your emergency fund. This is a pretty good deal considering most waiting periods are two weeks or longer for the standard pet insurance policies.

Coverage Limits

Excluding routine care and other types of treatments, Pawp has an incredible coverage range. We are really impressed by the number of pets you get coverage for. You can include up to six pets within a single Pawp policy. And the policy covers cats and dogs. What’s more, Pawp has no restrictions on your coverage. That means all dogs and cats are covered, regardless of age, breed, and even medical history. This is groundbreaking in the pet health insurance industry since most insurance policy providers won’t cover pre-existing conditions.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

As mentioned, Pawp doesn’t work with reimbursements or deductibles. This is probably one of the biggest selling points of the insurance plan, particularly for pet parents who hate the whole claims process, paperwork, and all. Pawp has no deductibles. Zero. Nada. Yeah, we know, pretty impressive. You never have to meet a certain amount before the emergency plan kicks in. get approved, and you’re covered instantly.

What’s more, Pawp doesn’t waste your time with reimbursement processes. Normally you have to pay the vet, file a claim, and then have your insurance provider pay you back. Why bother? With Pawp, the vet is paid directly by the emergency fund. So you cut out all those middle steps and you never have to deal with the check is in the mail scenario.

Claims & Service

Like its insurance policies themselves, Pawp’s claims process is not like other pet insurance companies. You don’t go to your vet, ask for a receipt, submit a claim, and receive a reimbursement check or deposit into your account. Instead, Pawp covers the emergency services you need on the spot. That’s right. They pay the bill while you are at the vet’s office, and you walk away debt free. Here’s how the process works in more detail:

1.Speak to a professional Pawp veterinarian

In an emergency situation, you’ll get in touch with a licensed Pawp veterinarian via instant video call. They’ll give you advice and first aid instructions and confirm your emergency. This is an important step since you can’t actually touch your emergency fund without it.

2.Visit your vet

Once your emergency has been confirmed, Pawp will release your emergency fund for use. You can go to any vet or emergency pet care clinic you want, and Pawp will honor the request.

3.Get the medical treatment you need

Once treatment is completed, ask the secretary at the emergency clinic or vet’s office to send an invoice to Pawp directly. There, someone will review your charges and proceed accordingly.

4.No reimbursement necessary

Pawp will pay the invoice amount up to $3,000. You don’t have to pay upfront and get reimbursed. Pawp takes care of the payment on the spot. It’s a lot simpler and requires a whole lot less paperwork.

Customer service is available via phone and live chat (yay), and Pawp has a good FAQ section on the site as well. Best of all, you can speak to a professional veterinarian 24/7 with all your pet care questions.

What You Might Like Best

Pawp is a great option for emergency situations. We LOVE that Pawp covers all pets, regardless of age, breed, or medical condition. We also like that you can cover up to 6 pets at the same time with one account. That’s downright brilliant.

What Pawp Could do Better

While we love this insurance provider for emergency care, Pawp is not a suitable option for anything else. You can’t get routine care, preventative medicine, prescription meds, etc. via Pawp. Bummer.
