Overview

Embrace offers pet parents an affordable way to keep their dogs and cats healthy and well cared for. With flexible pet insurance policies that let you choose the deductible, reimbursement level, and annual limit, Embrace ensures that any pet can be insured no matter what. Embrace also has extensive coverage plans, covering many items that other policies will not. These include dental work, medical exams, cancer treatments, and genetic conditions.

What Does it Cover

Embrace keeps things nice and simple. It offers a single, comprehensive policy that covers everything from accidents to illnesses. While you can personalize your plan, all policies come with:

  • Accident and illness coverage
  • Breed-specific conditions
  • Alternative therapies and rehabilitation
  • ER and specialist care
  • Diagnostic testing and imaging
  • Prescription drugs
  • Cancer treatment
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Surgery, hospitalization, and nursing care
  • Chronic conditions
  • Consultations, exam fees
  • Dental illnesses up to $1,000 per year

As we said, Embrace is exhaustive in its coverage terms. In fact, it is one of the most widely-covered plans out there. Looking at that coverage a little more closely, we can see that Embrace covers a lot of things that other policies won’t touch. For example, dental illnesses, behavioral therapy, and alternative therapies are frequently not covered by pet insurance. But Embrace does cover them.

Insurance Plans & Pricing

As mentioned, Embrace has basic policy options to keep things simple. There are two plans you can choose between:

  • Accident and illness policy
  • Accident-only policy

Accident and illness policies are available for all pets 14 years and younger. How much you pay will vary depending on the annual reimbursement limit you choose and your chosen deductible (the higher your deductible, the lower your monthly payments, etc.).

Accident-only policies are available for pets 15+ years old, although full coverage is only available for pets 14 and under. This plan covers:

  • Bloat
  • Foreign body ingestion
  • Being hit by a car
  • Torn cruciate ligament
  • Poisoning
  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Prescription drugs for covered conditions

Additionally, Embrace has an optional Wellness Rewards plan. This covers 100% of all routine vet visits, grooming costs, and training expenses. You set the annual limit on this coverage too, which is a nice touch.

You can get a 10% discount for multiple pets and a 5% military discount. Embrace does have a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you aren’t happy with your service, you can have a full refund, assuming Embrace hasn’t already paid out a claim. Cancellation after the first 30 days is possible but at a prorated amount.

What is Not Covered

There are some exclusions that vary depending on your policy type or specific situation. But in general, the Embrace exclusions are:

  • Cosmetic procedures (such as declawing, ear cropping, tail docking)
  • Breeding and whelping
  • DNA testing
  • Cloning
  • Some pre-existing conditions

Be careful to read the coverage details carefully because some things may not be covered that you thought were. For example, If a dog has a condition or injury that disqualifies it from coverage on one leg, the other legs might also not be covered (for that injury/condition).

Waiting Periods

Embrace has shorter waiting periods than some other pet insurance providers. For example, for illnesses, Embrace requires only a 14-day waiting period (most providers require at least 15 days). For accidents, the coverage is even faster, requiring only a 2-day waiting period. However, there are some speciality waiting periods to note. There is an orthopedic waiting period - for dogs only - which requires a 6-month wait (can be reduced to 14 days with an exam) for bone, joint, and ligament issues.

Coverage Limits

Embrace has a wide coverage that most pet parents will appreciate. You’ll get 90% coverage with unlimited claims, and only one deductible payout per year. There are annual caps on the coverage that you can set (increase the coverage percentage, decrease the limits, etc.). This is a way of personalizing your plan to fit your preferences.

Another thing that is limited is the age. While Embrace will cover any pet of any age for accidents, full accident and illness coverage is only available up to the age of 14 years.

The accident-only plan has a reimbursement limit of $5,000 per year with a $100 one-time annual deductible. After that, you’re reimbursed for 90% of your veterinary bills.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Deductibles range from $100-$1000 and reimbursement levels vary from 70%-90%. Embrace generally reimburses pet parents within 10-15 days of receiving the claim (assuming it’s covered). Here are a few examples:

Pet: Harry the Labrador Retriever

Diagnosis: Septic shock, stroke, bloated small intestine

Treatment cost: $12,613.26

Company reimbursed: $9,930.62

Pet: Isabelle the Cane Corso

Diagnosis: Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tear & foreign body removal

Treatment cost: $21,403

Company reimbursed: $12,500

Pet: Nell the Daschund Chihuahua

Diagnosis: Diabetes and Cushing’s Disease

Treatment cost: $17,945.45

Company reimbursed: $11,447.01

Embrace also has a diminishing deductible, which means your deductible goes down if your pet remains claim-free for a specified period of time. For every year your pet stays healthy, your annual deductible is reduced by $50.

Claims & Service

Embrace has several ways for pet parents to file a claim, including via the mobile app or online portal. These two options are incredibly convenient since they’re on your phone or computer, and are available 24/7. Just fill out the claims form with the relevant details (each pet has their own personalized claim form) and Embrace will take care of the rest.

Once the claim is received, you’ll be notified within 2 business days. Claims are officially processed within 10-15 days but generally happen much faster. Wellness Rewards claims are usually even faster, taking five days or less to process. Including necessary documentation such as invoices, visit notes, etc. will speed up the process too.

FYI, requesting a medical history review before you need to submit a claim can also help speed up the claims process. If you’re not that tech-savvy or prefer to do things old-school style, you can also file a claim via email, fax, or even snail mail. Once claims are completed, you’ll generally receive your refund within 2-3 business days (for direct deposits, 5-7 days for checks).

Embrace has customer service available via phone and email during extended business hours. You can also take advantage of the 24/7 pet health hotline.

What You Might Like Best

Embrace will cover your pet for life if you have enrolled in a full coverage plan before your pet turns 15. That means if you make it in under the radar, your pet is covered no matter what.

Additionally, Embrace has some extensive coverage, particularly treatments that other pet insurance providers don’t cover like alternative therapies, behavioral therapy, and dental work. Genetic conditions and exam fees are also big factors that aren’t generally covered (but are by Embrace).

What Embrace Could do Better

Illness coverage stops at age 14 unless you’re already covered. Bummer.
