With an attractive multi-pet discount for those who own several pets, and coverage for dental illnesses and behavioral issues, Pumpkin plans are a great choice if you want your pet to have extensive coverage. Pumpkin plans also make flexibility a priority by allowing you to visit any licensed vet in the US or Canada.
Unlike some other providers’ plans, Pumpkin plans don’t offer a 24/7 vet helpline benefit — a feature that can be extremely valuable in an emergency. Likewise, Pumpkin doesn’t have an app, which isn’t ideal if you prefer to manage your finances on the go.

A real stand out is that Pumpkin plans cover dental illnesses and behavioral issues,

Like most pet insurance plans, Pumpkin plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions. However, with Pumpkin plans, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future if the condition is curable. An injury or illness that is cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
When you’re buying coverage, you can choose specialized policies for puppies and dogs, or kittens and cats.
As with most insurance plans, the amount you pay for your coverage will depend on factors such as your pet’s age, breed, location, and your plan type.
If you’re adding more than one pet to your policy, Pumpkin plans offer a 10% multi-pet discount for each additional pet enrolled.
When you’re taking out a policy, you can select your annual deductible: $100, $250, $500 or $1000. Your deductible is the amount you need to pay toward any covered vet bills before your reimbursements kick in. As with most insurance plans, you can usually lower the cost of your insurance premiums by selecting a higher deductible.
After your deductible is met, Pumpkin plans will reimburse you for 90% of your covered vet bills, up to your annual limit.
When enrolling in a Pumpkin pet insurance plan, you can choose an annual coverage limit of $10,000, $20,000, or unlimited. In the case of cats, you can choose an annual coverage limit of $7,000, $15,000, or unlimited.
Pumpkin pet insurance plans have a 14 day waiting period for coverage.
You can submit a claim online through Pumpkin’s member center. You’ll need to upload a copy of your vet’s bill and any relevant medical information relating to your pet. Once your claim is approved, you can receive your funds via direct deposit or check. Alternatively, Pumpkin plans can reimburse your vet directly if the vet doesn’t require you to pay the full fees upfront.
You can contact Pumpkin through phone, live chat, email, or text if your query is more general. Live chat and phone support hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30am-8:30pm (EST). Text and email support are available over the weekend. The company states that it will reply to emails in under a day.
When I visited Pumpkin’s website, I found it extremely user-friendly and found all the information I needed about the company and its claims process in its FAQs.
Something I particularly like about Pumpkin plans is that its waiting period is the same for all conditions, including knee injuries and hip dysplasia. Some other pet insurance plans impose an extended waiting period for certain types of conditions.
Further, I was pleased to note that Pumpkin plans offer a 10% multi-pet discount for all additional pets.
If you like to manage your finances on the go, you may prefer a provider that offers a mobile app. Likewise, you should note that it is possible to find more affordable alternatives to Pumpkin, although these may not offer the same level of coverage.

If you are seeking insurance for your dog or cat, Pumpkin could be a great option. While its premiums are fairly high, I think they could be well worth it, because Pumpkin plans cover dental illnesses and behavioral issues, which are excluded by some other pet insurance plans. Plus, I was reassured to learn that Pumpkin plans will allow you to take your pet to any licensed vet in the US or Canada.
